What Do You Want to Know?

It’s natural to have lots of questions when you’re looking for help with your dog, and in an industry where anyone can register as a dog trainer, we think its important to be clear about what you're getting when you work with The Modern Canine. Please have a read through some FAQs below and our Terms and Conditions, if theres anything you’re unsure about, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we'll get back to you ASAP.

What qualifications do you have?

Our head trainer Kate is qualified in the following 

- canine body language

- nutrition and behaviour

- canine and feline first aid

- Applied Diploma in Advanced Canine Behaviour Level 5 (currently studying)

Kate also has a range of certificates from Canine Principles, including areas such as Inspiring Resilience in Dogs, Canine Fear and Anxiety and Dogs and Children.

Do you have experience with anxious dogs?

Yes, having worked with dogs for a long time, Kate has helped dogs and owners find ways of safely getting their pet the exercise they need whilst working on ways to help dogs overcome their fear or reactive behaviour. 

What are your services?

We currently offer private 121 consultations, at your home, our home or out and about (or all 3!), online training sessions and guidance, and online courses. 

We are partnered with Our Pet People who provide a range of pet care services including dog walking. 

Are you insured?

Of course! We're insured with Petplan, covering public liability and care of animals for up to £1250. We're happy to provide a copy of our insurance documents to any of our clients. Be wary of a business offering services who can't or won't.

What methods of training do you use?

When working with dogs, we understand the importance of taking them as individuals, which is why we don't offer group classes or a one size fits all approach. Our training plans are completely personalised to the dog and owner and reflect their individual goals. We believe in a balanced approach to training. 

What is the difference between Force Free training and Balanced trainers?

The term force free is often used to describe using techniques that offer positive rewards when a behaviour is offered, rather than "punishment" techniques. This is where things get confusing. The term "balanced training" refers to using the 4 quadrants of learning in dogs and includes the above as well as positive punishment and negative rinforcement. Terms and Conditions

The Important Bits

Walking

  1. You must ensure your dog has adequate and up to date insurance, vaccinations, worm and  flea treatment and any other medication/health tests as required by your vet.

  2. You must inform Kate’s Paws whether your dog is castrated/neutered; females should not be walked whilst in season. Failure to disclose this may result in withdrawal of services and Kate's Paws accept no responsibility for unwanted pregnancies or any unwanted behaviour in public around a female in season or by an uncastrated male. 

  3. You must inform Kate’s Paws, with as much notice as possible, of any concerns regarding any unsociable behavior, illness, accidents or anything else concerning your dog prior to walking. 

  4. Unless otherwise discussed (nervous or anxious dog walk and private services), your dog will be walked on a combination of private and pack walks. Kate’s Paws will assess your dog’s behavior on walks and may, at any time, suggest your dog will need private walks only which will incur additional charges. Safety of your dog, other client’s dogs and the general public is our utmost priority in these situations. 

  5. Kate’s Paws insurance covers public liability, including damage to public property. You will need to ensure you have adequate insurance to protect your dog. 

  6. GPS tracking of all walks will be provided (where mobile phone signal is available) and a summary of your dog’s walk including distance walked at the end of each walk. 

  7. Multiple dogs from the same household will be charged at an additional £4 per hour. 

  8. Bank holiday and weekend rates are an additional £3 per hour for all services and must be agreed upon in advance. 

  9. Any photos taken of your pet will be posted to social media and my website unless otherwise discussed prior to services commencing.

  10. Kate's Paws must be informed of any CCTV, monitoring system or pet camera at your property at time of booking. Failure to do so will result in services being withdrawn immediately and no fees refunded. 

  11. The responsibility  for your dog remains with you, the owner, whilst they are in Kate’s Paws care. 

  12. You must seek veterinary advice regarding your dog’s exercise regime. 

  13. During extreme weather conditions, Kate’s Paws may, without notice, reduce, alter or cancel services if it is within the best interest of your dog’s health. For example, during hot weather where risk of heat stroke is high. 

  14. You must provide your dog with all they will need for walks, including collars, ID tags (legal requirement), leads and coats. Kate’s Paws may withdraw services if legal requirements for pets in public places are not met or I feel your dog may suffer without them, for example, coats in cold weather. We provide and use our own poo bags. Please remove all extra items from leads, i.e. poo bag holders, as they get easily tangled in other leads. 

  15. By using Kate's Paws services you agree to these terms and conditions. 

  16. Fresh clean water must be available to your pet after walks. I will refill these during drop offs. 

  17. You must inform Kate’s Paws prior to services commencing, or at the earliest opportunity of any allergies or intolerances. We provide treats whilst on walks that are purchased from a range of sources. 

  18. Kate’s Paws will care for your animal to the best of our ability and whilst we will make every effort to ensure your pet is well looked after in your absence, we cannot be held responsible for any loss, injury or death to any dog(s). 

Payment

Payment must be made in advance of the following weeks walks and  by no later than Monday of each week at 10am. Failure to ensure advance payment is  received may result in my services being withdrawn or additional fees being charged. 

Home Stay

  1. You must ensure your pet(s) have adequate and up to date insurance, vaccinations, worm and flea treatment and any other medication/health tests as required by your vet.

  2. You must inform Kate’s Paws as to whether your dog/cat is castrated/neutered; female dogs should not be walked whilst in season. Failure to disclose this may result in withdrawal of services and Kate’s Paws accept no responsibility for unwanted pregnancies or any unwanted behavior in public around a female in season or by an uncastrated male. Multiple dogs from the same household who are entire are accepted at the discretion of Kate’s Paws and only after initial consultation, additional charges may be incurred. 

  3. You must inform Kate’s Paws with as much notice as possible, of any concerns regarding any behavior, illness, accidents or anything else concerning your pet(s) or property prior to booking. 

  4. Kate’s Paws insurance covers public liability, including damage to publicproperty. You will need to ensure you have adequate insurance to protect your pet(s) and property during your booking period. Kate’s Paws accepts no liability for any accidents that may occur during the booking period no matter how they happen. 

  5. We will provide GPS tracking of all services outside of the property (where mobile phone signal is available). 

  6. Multiple dogs from the same household will be charged at an additional £4 per dog per 24 hour period. 

  7. Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights are charged at an additional £3 per 24 hour period for all services and must be agreed upon in advance. 

  8. Bank holidays are charged at an additional £5 per 24 hour period and must be agreed upon in advance.

  9. Any photos taken of your pet will be posted to social media and the website unless otherwise discussed at time of booking.

  10. Kate’s Paws will not offer home stay services in properties where CCTV or monitoring systems of any kind are in place regardless of their intended use, even if switched off, in order to protect our right to privacy. This includes audio monitoring systems. Should any CCTV or monitoring system be discovered during your booking period, services will be ceased immediately and all fees will be kept. Kate’s Paws will accept CCTV or monitoring systems that cover the exterior of the property only at our discretion. 

  11. The responsibility for your dog remains with you, the owner, whilst they are in Kate’s Paws care. 

  12. During home stay periods, we will endeavor to stick to your normal routine and your pet(s) will not be left for more than 6 hours during the day. Our home stay specialist will sleep at your property and your pets(s) will not be left between the hours of 9pm and 7am. Please discuss at time of booking if this is not suitable for your pet(s), additional charges may apply.

  13. Kate’s Paws will provide a basic security deterrence during your booking period including shutting/opening curtains, activating house alarms, taking in mail and where possible, ensuring bin day collections are kept to. Kate’s Paws will not be responsible for any other maintenance of your property.

  14. You must ensure your property has adequate and fully functioning fire safety alarms. These will be tested on the first day of your booking period and if found to be inadequate steps will be made to ensure they are functioning and you will be liable for any cost involved. 

  15. You must ensure that basic provisions including heating, electricity, hot water, cooking and food storage facilities and bath/shower facilities are accessible for the duration of your booking. All normal household bills are your responsibility during your booking period and Kate’s Paws accepts no liability for any increase in costs during this time. 

  16. Kate’s Paws will endeavor to ensure your home is safe and secure during your booking period, however we will not be held responsible for any breakages or damage caused to the property during this period. 

  17. Kate’s Paws will leave your property in the same way we find it. 

  18. Kate’s Paws will not accept deliveries for anyone other than the home owner and their immediate family as listed on the factsheet filled out at time of booking. A list of anyone who has access to the property must also be provided at time of booking.

  19. You must provide your pet(s) with all they will need during the booking period, including food, bowls, beds, collars, ID tags (legal requirement), leads, coats and poo bags. Any item that has not been provided by you and is deemed necessary for the care of your pet(s) by Kate’s Paws will be purchased and billed to you without prior consultation. 

  20. You must inform Kate’s Paws during initial consultation, or at the earliest opportunity of any allergies or intolerances your pet(s) may suffer. 

  21. Kate’s Paws primarily offers pet care services for dogs and cats during your booking period, any other animals/plants that need care during this time must be discussed and agreed upon at time of booking and may incur additional charges. 

  22. You must provide Kate’s Paws with contact details of your nominated emergency contact who will be responsible for making decisions relating to the care of your pet(s) in your absence. In the event you or your emergency contact cannot be reached, Kate’s Paws will seek any relevant veterinary advice or care for which you will be liable for any costs incurred including mileages charges and hourly rates of our staff. If deemed in the best interest of your pet(s), contact may be made after an event has occurred. 

  23. You will be provided with regular updates as deemed suitable by Kate’s Paws including pictures of what your pet(s) have been up to during the booking period and we are contactable to discuss your pets care throughout your booking period. We do ask that you respect sleeping times and only contact Kate’s Paws in the case of an emergency between 10pm and 6am. All calls and messages will be answered as soon as possible. 

  24. Kate’s Paws will care for your animal to the best of our ability and whilst we will make every effort to ensure your pet is well looked after in your absence, we cannot be held responsible for any loss, injury or death to any pet(s) either inside or outside of your property. 

Payment

  1. Payment must be made in advance and received no later than 7 days prior to booked period commencing. Failure to ensure payment is received will result a late payment fee of £5 per day. 

  2. A non-refundable deposit of 10% of the total booking fee is required at time of booking, without this your booking is not secured. 

  3. If your booking is cancelled more than 7 days before booked period commences by you, no fees will be due – the deposit will be held. If cancellation is made within 7 days of booking starting, full payment will be due, including any late fees.
